Fights at the Fitz Full Report

On May 12, at the Fitz Hotel & Casino in Tunica, Mississippi, Fights at the Fitz showcased successful pro debuts and veterans trying to move up the ranks.

The main event featured hard-hitting heavyweight Quincey Palmer (3-0, 3 KOs) and Chris Miller, who was making his pro debut. Miller was able to make his first pro boxing fight a success by using his legs and jabbing at the plodding Palmer, who absorbed nearly every shot thrown, thanks to nonexistent head movement or footwork. Though Palmer’s shots carried firepower, he looked for one knockout shot rather than putting together an offense–a tactic that went unrewarded in the four-rounder, as all judges (Gerald Deming, Mack Thornton and Reccia Mullins) scored the contest 39-37 for Miller.

TAYLOR RISES FROM CANVAS TO OUTPOINT TRUAX

In the latest edition of Shobox: The Next Generation, held on April 20 at the Beau Rivage Resort & Casino in Biloxi, Mississippi, young prospects were given the opportunity to showcase their skills before headliner Jermain Taylor, former middleweight world champion and now on the comeback trail, took the stage in his second post-layoff fight.

In the main event, the middleweight Taylor (29-4-1, 18 KOs) began the fight cautiously, as did opponent Caleb Truax (18-0-1, 10 KOs), who seemed to take several rounds to warm up. The gun-shy Taylor landed mostly jabs, with a couple of glancing overhand rights thrown in, for the first couple of rounds, but by round three began to advance behind the jab and ripped off a three-punch combo; meanwhile, Truax tried, with minimal success, to counter. TORN BICEP KOs FERNANDO GUERRERO!

From Fightnews.com – Dominican southpaw Fernando Guerrero (23-1, 18 KO’s) of Salisbury, Md., suffered a partially torn left biceps in training camp, forcing him to withdraw from his upcoming fight against Chris “The Irish Ghost” Fitzpatrick. The previously announced 10-round super middleweight fight between Guerrero and Fitzpatrick was tabbed to open a three-fight telecast on Showtime, which will now be a doubleheader from Beau Rivage Resort & Casino in Biloxi, Miss. The main event will feature former undisputed 160-pound World Champion Jermain Taylor (29-4-1, 18 KO’s) facing undefeated Caleb “Golden” Truax (18-0-1, 10 KO’s) in a 10-round middleweight bout. In the 10-round junior middleweight co-feature, former Cuban amateur standout Erislandy Lara (15-1-1, 10 KO’s) takes on former world title challenger Ronald Hearns (26-2, 20 KO’s).

MIDDLEWEIGHT BRANDON HARDER EXPLODES ONTO SCENE!

This past Saturday night at the Landers Center in Southaven, MS, middleweight Brandon Harder made his pro boxing debut in style with a devastating knockout victory against Willie Bryant.

At 52 seconds into Round 3 the southpaw threw a textbook short right hand and caught Bryant square on the proverbial ‘button’, putting him to sleep in dramatic fashion, his limp neck and arms being held up by the rope as his body just laid there motionless.

Experiencing the glory of winning by KO is nothing new to Harder. As a MMA fighter Harder is 2-1, 1 KO, 1 Submission), but he showed Prize Fight Promotions and his large crew of supporters that he has found a home within the squared circle. Read more »

Flowers Finishes Dowdy in “Unfinished Business” at New Daisy!

On a fight card dubbed “Unfinished Business,” Monyette Flowers came up big, winning by a TKO in the second round of the featured bout at the Omni New Daisy Theatre on Tuesday night (April 10).

Tyrone Dowdy, who went the distance against Flowers in a losing effort 2/28 at the New Daisy, was determined to bring his fans a higher-level of satisfaction. Monyette Flowers, of Flowers Power Boxing stable, vowed he was, “coming back to put somebody to sleep.” Read more »

James Toney Headlines Southaven, Missisippi, Fight Card: Full Report

On April 7 at Landers Center in Southaven, Mississippi, fans were treated to a nine-fight card that culminated with James “Lights Out” Toney (73-7-3, 44 KOs) fighting for the IBU Heavyweight Championship belt against Bobby “The Celtic Warrior” Gunn (21-4-1, 18 KOs). Toney entered the ring to “Walking in Memphis,” and walked out as the new beltholder thanks to his still-formidable power and considerable ring savvy. Round 1 opened with Toney on the attack, stalking Gunn and keeping his left hand low to lure in his opponent, who couldn’t mount an effective offense–and the story remained the same in all five rounds of the scheduled 12-rounder. James “Lights Out” Toney Becomes Eight-Time World Champ

On April 7 at the Landers Center in Southaven, Mississippi, seven-time champion and future Hall of Famer James “Lights Out” Toney (73-7-3, 44 KOs) received a five-round workout against Bobby “The Celtic Warrior” Gunn (21-4-1, 18 KOs) during which he was only lightly tested. Toney, at 43 years old, sported a softened midsection (he weighed in at 248 pounds) but displayed still-sharp reflexes and head movement as he stalked the younger Gunn and relied upon his slickness and considerable experience to avoid absorbing shots. But This Is My Time

With less than two weeks separating Bobby “The Celtic Warrior” Gunn from touching gloves with James “Lights Out” Toney in what has the potential to make for the one of the most exciting heavyweight matchups in some time, trash talking, politics and everything else that builds up a great fight has little bearing now.

When Gunn and Toney go to battle April 7 for the IBA Heavyweight Title, all that will matter that night is who the better fighter is, and who emerges as the IBA Heavyweight champion.  Their past victories, championships and accolades mean nothing once the bell sounds to commence the first round.

MARCH FITZ REPORT

Four back-to-back first-round knockouts were bookended by two four-rounders that went the distance at the latest Fights at the Fitz at Fitzgerald’s Hotel & Casino on March 24 in Tunica, Mississippi. The enthusiastic crowd was treated to plenty of action with fighters from both coasts and regional fan-favorites duking it out–frequently to devastating conclusions.

In the opening junior middleweight bout, John Thompson from Newark, New Jersey, displayed a cracking jab from the opening bell, which he used in tandem with uppercuts to the body to dominate Los Angeles-based Bryan Brooks in a one-sided battle. The lunging, off-balance Brooks landed in the single digits in each of the four rounds, and Thompson’s jabs did more damage than Brooks’ best shots, leading the three judges–Gerald Deming, Reccia Mullins and Mack Thornton–to score all four rounds for Thompson, 40-36.

WADE vs UPSHAW

Prize Fight Boxing and the Fitz are gearing up for Saturday night’s “Fights at the Fitz”. On March 24, fight fans will see the explosive Dominic Wade (11-0, 8 KO’s) battle a game Marcus Upshaw (14-7-2, 6 KO’s) in an 8 round Middleweight main event.

The fight card showcases a 4 round cruiser fight between Codie Shuffield of Watervalley, MS, and Jonathan Fort out of Columbus, MS. Female lightweights, Lucretia Meacham of Little Rock and Kerri Hill of Fort Smith, AR, will battle over 6 rounds. A 6 Round heavy contest will be held between Little Rock’s, Mike Wessel and Terrell Woods of Fort Worth, TX. Rounding out the card will be the Memphis’ Marlon Lewis vs Sid Chase of LA, CA, in a 4 round feud.
