Marty Robbins (18-17-1, 15 KOs) continued to excite the crowd with his power punching in a Lightweight fight in the latest night of boxing at the New Daisy Theatre. Robbins looked impressive as he displayed power punching and a sharp uppercut en route to a seven-knockdown performance of Chris Burford (4-14, 3 KOs) who could not continue after his seventh trip to the canvas.
Burford entered the fight fresh off a dominating knockout victory just as Robbins did, but Robbins clearly brought the heavier arsenal Tuesday night. Beginning in round two, Robbins’ uppercut began finding its way through Burford’s guard.
Robbins dropped Burford with a left uppercut in the second round and the third round. But, Burford valiantly battled back to start the fourth before Robbins again found an avenue down which to drive his hard left hand, dropping Burford again.
After remaining on his feet during the fifth round, Burford again absorbed Robbins’ power shots, hitting the canvas twice from looping right hands.
Burford refused to quit and returned for the seventh round where another uppercut sat him on the canvas only to see him rise one more time. But, it proved to be the last time as Robbins struck with yet another left uppercut that sat Burford on his rear shaking his head, unable to continue.
Galarza Outpoints Journeyman Yarborough!
In a Welterweight fight, Lester Yarborough (12-40-1, 5KOs) fought a defensive strategy against the much quicker and busier Louis Galarza (5-1, 2 KOs) as Galarza easily out pointed him 60-54 on all scorecards.
Galarza began digging right hands to the body in round two and flurried with a barrage of punches to end the third round. Yarborough continued to offer little offensively, instead fighting to survive and clinch his way out of trouble.
Kassi Dismantles Powell in Pro Debut!
Heavyweight Frederick Kassi (1-0, 1 KO) made his professional debut in impressive fashion as he easily dismantled Kenny Powell (2-3-1, 2 KOs), knocking him down in the second round.
Kassi unleashed power shots from the very beginning. In round one a Kassi left hand stunned Powell and put him on the defensive. Kassi then stormed in the second, plunging a hard right hand into Powell’s body that sent him to the canvas. Powell weathered the storm as Kassi seemed to tire during the second half of the round.
But, Powell had suffered enough and refused to answer the bell to begin the third, repeatedly telling corner man Red Fortner “that’s it” and shaking his head.
Rios TKO’s Smith in 2
Joey Rios (5-0, 3 KOs) from the Bronx, NY made the trip down south worthwhile as he kept busy in round one and then unleashed a fury in round two against local fighter Bruce Smith (1-13). Rios displayed power with both hands as he sent Smith to the canvas twice in the second round. A left hook to the ribs sent Smith down first, followed by a right to the ribs that did the same. Then Rios closed the show by finishing Smith off with another left to the body, earning him a TKO victory at 2:23 in round two.
Amateur Davis Pounds Out a Victory!
Jessie Davis pounded his way to victory in round one over Jimmy Johns. Davis began landing heavy shots and dropped Johns to the canvas. His corner men attempted to throw in the towel and retire their fighter but changed their mind when questioned by referee Allan Lovell.
Davis immediately jumped on his opponent and landed a hard right hand followed by another right to the temple, sending Johns down for the count at 2:45 in round one.
Robbins Upsets Conrad with TKO Win!
Posted in 2003, Boxing News, Reports with tags Boxing on Beale, Burford, Conrad, Freeman, Harris, Lovell, Memphis, New Daisy, Robbins, Roy, Smith, Vandevender on November 5, 2003 by ChampBy Scotti Vandevender – Fightnews.com
The New Daisy Theatre’s November installment of “Boxing on Beale” featured a hard-fought lightweight battle ending in a TKO victory for Marty Robbins (16-17-1, 13 KOs) over local favorite Clay Conrad (11-1, 1 KO).
Conrad began strong as the busier of the two fighters, and things looked bleak for Robbins as blood poured from his nose to end the first round.
But Robbins returned fire in the second and began displaying the power that has earned him knockouts in almost all of his victories.
The middle rounds featured the two fighters standing toe-to-toe, trading power shots. Conrad led with right hands while Robbins began to land several strong uppercuts, snapping Conrad’s head.
At the end of round seven Conrad’s face adorned the same color of crimson that Robbins had after round one. Robbins continued to land strong shots as Conrad’s punches began to lose their zip.
Near the end of round nine Robbins landed a left uppercut and followed it with a right hand to the top of the head that dropped Conrad to the canvas on all fours. Conrad up righted himself and attempted to prepare for battle but was still wobbled and began to fall.
Referee Allan Lovell kept the dazed Conrad upright and halted the bout at 2:59 in round nine.
Roy Shows Power
In another lightweight bout, Terrence Roy (4-0) used his tremendous speed and some surprising power to soundly defeat a game Antonio Smith (7-32-2, 4 KOs). Roy’s first punch was a huge left hook that dropped Smith straight to the canvas. Smith was visibly shaken from the tremendous punch but called on his reserve and experience to steady himself enough to continue and finish the round.
The next couple of rounds featured Roy exhibiting the speed that has earned him a 4-0 start as a professional. Smith had no answer for the rapid punches and escapability Roy displayed.
In round four Roy again showed his powerful punching by landing solid combinations and wobbling Smith. As Roy looked to the referee like he expected a stoppage, Smith continued forward absorbing Roy’s punches.
Round seven saw an accidental head butt send Roy to the canvas in pain. But Roy regained his composure and continued in strong fashion with his speed and reflexes for a solid win.
Burford KO’s Freeman
In the first fight of the evening, Chris Buford (4-13, 3 KOs) stopped Rodney Freeman
(0-1) with a big right hook at :43 left in the second round to earn a TKO victory. Freeman began aggressively, landing overhand rights with force as Buford covered himself. Buford stormed back with a left hook right on the chin as Freeman smiled.
Quentin Smith vs. Joseph Harris
Quentin Smith (1-3) and Joseph Harris (4-3, 3 KOs) fought a rather lackluster exhibition match that each treated as just that. They maneuvered and worked up a sweat practicing their sparring but not much more.
Martinez Out-hustles Shufford!
Posted in 2003, Boxing News, Reports with tags Birmingham, Boxing, Bryant, Bryoles, Cedric Kushner, Dunaway, Horne, Hughes, Jiminez, Lundsford, Martin, Martinez, McCline, Miller, Prize Fight, Pudar, Sams, Shufford, Town, Vandevender, Verbeck, Ward, Woodward, Zaganas on October 25, 2003 by ChampBy Scotti Vandevender – Fightnews.com
Professional boxing returned to Sam’s Town Casino Saturday night with a 9-card lineup in the Cedric Kushner and Prize Fight Boxing promotion – “Heavyweight Explosion.”
After having lost his last two fights by TKO, heavyweight Gilbert Martinez (16-6-1 7 KOs) pressed the action and worked the body en route to a victory over the once highly regarded Charles Shufford (20-5, 9 KOs). Shufford entered the fight with a victory in his last fight and a somewhat controversial stoppage in his prior fight with Jameel McCline, a fight where he hurt McCLine early.
Where Shufford looked to regain his footing on the stepladder to contendership, Martinez effectively halted any such progress. By initiating the action and bullying his way in headfirst, Martinez garnered a split decision victory.
From the first round on Shufford seemed happy to absorb body shots and wait for a chance to land. Unfortunately he never received the chances he sought as occasional left hooks provided the only real offense he displayed.
Shufford landed a right left combo and followed it up with a right hand in the fourth round, but Martinez pounded his chest in his best King Kong impersonation and again lurched forward.
The battle continued the same with Martinez lunging forward and landing to the body while Shufford struck with very sporadic left hooks. Referee Elmo Adolph did his best in round six to press the action by urging both fighters to “fight” which resulted in the two swapping left hooks.
But that marked the majority of the excitement as Martinez earned victory through his much higher punch output.
Pudar Hammers Ward
Jovo Pudar (20-1, 10 KOs) used his superior strength and power to defeat Dan Ward (28-15-1, 14 KOs) from nearby West Memphis, AR. After an exchange of heavy punches in the corner of the ring at the end of round one, Pudar began to boom body punches and back Ward against the ropes in round two.
Pudar hammered Ward into the ropes in all four corners before landing a shot to the top of Ward’s head as he attempted to duck. Ward fell to all fours. He beat the count but referee Elmo Adolph deemed Ward unable to continue and Pudar scored a TKO at 2:48 in round two.
Lundsford vs. Woodward, Technical Draw
Yet another heavyweight battle saw local Tunica, MS fan-favorite Ray Lunsford (16-3-1, 7 KOs) pulling ahead of opponent Vernon Woodward (3-7-1, 3 KOs) with aggressiveness and power punches before an accidental headbutt at the end of round two opened a huge gash above his left eye. Blood immediately poured from the wound covering his chest as the ringside doctor halted the fight. This resulted in a technical draw as Mississippi boxing rules state must occur if the fight lasts less than four rounds. By Scotti Vandevender – Fightnews.com
Journyman Vedder Out-points Martin
Heavyweight joureyman David Vedder (22-22-5, 3 KOs) easily out-pointed Wesley Martin (13-39-8, 7 KOs) in a four round contest. Vedder was the aggressor as he outmaneuvered the mostly defensive Martin.
Bryant Dismantles Phifer
Light heavyweight Rowland Bryant (2-0, 2 KOs) easily dismantled Michael Phifer (1-2, 1 KO). Bryant landed a combination that felled Phifer and earned a TKO victory as the referee determined Phifer could not continue.
Females Fights Excite!
In the first of two female bouts, Hollie Dunaway (5-3, 3 KOs) outworked the much taller Shannon Birmingham (2-2, 1 KO) en route to a unanimous decision in their four-round fight. Dunaway charged hard from the onset and stunned Birmingham with a couple of right hands to the head. Birmingham then tried to remain at a distance and jab to keep Dunaway away but the aggressive Dunaway continued to barge in and strike to the head.
Canadian female 105-pounder Vaia Zaganas (12-2, 6 KOs) landed power shots in bunches as her opponent Nikki Verbeck (0-8) has no answer for her power and skill. Verbeck couldn’t locate her corner at the end of round one and shortly after the bell her corner threw in the towel to end the onslaught of punches at :24 into round two. Verbeck vehemently argued with her corner after the stoppage and stormed from the ring to her dressing room.
Horne vs. Broyles – Pro Debuts!
Newcomers Dana Horne (1-0, 1 KO) and Timothy Broyles (0-1) made their pro debuts in the middleweight division in a short but explosive brawl. Broyles began throwing power shots and Horne immediately returned fire, stunning Broyles on a couple of occasions. But Broyles continued to throw power punches as Horne landed a precise right uppercut that extinguished Broyle’s lights. His mouthpiece dropped from his mouth as he fell face-first like a tree sawed at the roots.
The bout was immediately waved off and after a few minutes Broyles was again on his feet and seemed to be doing fine, able to walk from the ring with only a little assistance. By Scotti Vandevender – Fightnews.com
Jiminez’s Body Shots Chop Miller Down
In the final bout of the evening, the monstrous 6’6″ and 249-pound Albert Jiminez (4-0, 4 KOs) recorded another knockout victory in his win over Calvin Miller (4-15, 3 KOs). Jiminez has yet to reach the second round as a pro. He hammered Miller with body shots as Miller buried his head in his arms to avoid blows to the head from the heavy puncher.
First a right hook to the ribs dropped Miller. Shortly thereafter, another right hook to the body had him down again. Miller stood up and continued to fight but after another Jiminez body shot Miller again knelt on the canvas shaking his head no as referee Keith Hughes asked him if he wished to continue. Jiminez ended the night with a TKO at 1:24 in round one after his display of powerful body punching.
Reid Gives Doyle A Workout!
Posted in 2003, Boxing News, Reports with tags Doyle, Lovell, New Daisy, Reid, Vandevender on October 10, 2003 by ChampLight Heavyweight Thomas Reid (30-11-1, 12 KOs) defeated Robert Doyle (6-13-1, 3 KOs) in workmanlike fashion. Reid slapped shots to Doyle’s head early, leaving his face reddened. It almost matched the color of his maroon trunks by the start of round two.
In that round as Doyle attempted to use his awkward style to approach, Reid hammered a combination to Doyle’s head that wobbled him. As Doyle wobbled from the punch his balance failed and he staggered from one corner to the other side of the ring, falling headfirst through the ropes and almost out of the ring. Immediately referee Allan Lovell waved off the bout as Doyle clearly could not continue.

Pillow Stops Gilliam!
Posted in 2003, Boxing News, Reports with tags Gilliam, Huttleston, New Daisy, Pillow, Vandevender on October 8, 2003 by ChampLightweight Jerome Pillow (4-0, 3 KOs) looked sharp in a battle with the larger Walter Gilliam (0-4), stopping him after two rounds. Even though outweighed by twelve pounds, Pillow began as the active aggressor and dropped Gilliam with a body shot followed by a straight right hand just before the bell to end the second.
Gilliam barely beat the ten count as the bell sounded. Then referee Clay Huttleston halted the bout as the ringside physician declared a gash above Gilliam’s eye that opened after Pillow’s right hand was too severe for Gilliam to continue.

Roy Overcomes A Valiant Buford!
Posted in 2003, Boxing News, Reports with tags Burford, New Daisy, Roy, Vandevender on October 8, 2003 by ChampLightweight Terrence Roy (3-0) and Chris Buford (3-13, 2 KOs) fought once again in a four-round contest with the same outcome as their last bout: a unanimous victory for Roy. This battle featured much the same as the last one offered. Roy proved too quick for Buford, but Buford gave a valiant effort in continuing through a barrage of rapid punches.
Roy staggered Buford in the second round but Buford continued to come forward, remaining unafraid to trade punches right up to the end of the final round as the two slugged it out until the bell rang. By Scotti Vandevender – Fightnews.com
