IBF Title Eliminator

Lamont “Havoc” Peterson (28-1-1, 14 kO’s) looks to get back on the road to contention Friday night on ESPN2 when he faces Victor Manuel Cayo (26-1, 18 KO’s)  in an IBF Jr. Welter Title Eliminator at the Cosmopolitan of Las Vegas, Las Vegas, NV. Peterson is 1-1-1 in his last three fights. Most recently he fought now WBC Welter Champ, Victor Ortiz (Andre Berto, UD12) to a draw in December of 2011. Peterson’s undefeated record was broken in December of 2009, after a tough loss to Timothy Bradley in a fight for the WBO Jr. Welter Title. The eliminator would setup a fight against Amir Khan, who recently acquired the title from one Zab Judah (KO5).

Watch ESPN2 Friday night to see if Lamont will be the victor––verses Victor.

MEMPHIS, TN – A night billed as TNT at the DCC and that featured Two-Time Heavyweight Champion Hasim Rahman and an interesting NABO Middleweight showdown between Patrick Majewski and Marcus Upshaw was owned by a young boxer three weeks removed from his seventeenth birthday. Dusty Harrison, 17, entered the ring for the fourth bout of the evening to make his professional debut against Alphonso Alexander and quickly became a fan favorite as he had the boxing fans in attendance buzzing long after he was done dismantling Alexander over four rounds with a tantalizing display of speed and accuracy rarely found in a boxer so young. Two impressive young fighters stole the show from a former 2 time heavyweight champion on a hot and rainy north Mississippi Saturday night. The six fights, dubbed “TNT at the DCC,” featured former heavyweight champion Hasim Rahman, but would be remembered for two fighters (one of whom left with a title) that could be future champions themselves.

17-year old Washington D.C.-native Dusty Harrison would display tremendous poise and skill against Welterweight Alphonso Alexander (0-3) in his professional debut. Touted as the youngest professional fighter in the United States, Harrison would immediately win over the slightly wary crowd by not wasting punches in the first round. He wasn’t over-active, but whenever he threw, Harrison landed loud, punishing shots that echoed through the arena and elicited “oohs” from the crowd. Alexander wasn’t impressed, choosing to trash talk his younger opponent throughout the fight. It was an interesting tactic because Harrison seemed to choose a different side of the ring to dominate throughout the fight’s four rounds, while Alexander was little more than a trash-talking heavy bag. Harrison was impressive and the crowd appreciated his efforts, which would result in him taking a unanimous decision, 40-36 on the judges’ scorecards.

On January 29, Fights at the Fitz rang in the new year with six competitive bouts at the Fitz Hotel and Casino in Tunica, Mississippi. Some of the fighters, meanwhile, got their own bells rung, as half of the fights didn’t go the distance.

The middleweight main event featured Dominic Wade (9-0, 7 KOs), named one of the top prospects for 2011 on ESPN’s “Super 25” list. Wade was already gearing up for an appearance on Friday Night Fights on February 18, but first he’d have to get past the more experienced Brian Norman (17-10, 5 KOs).

Wade began the fight briskly, and quickly found a home for left hands to Norman’s body, dominating the round, though Norman was able to land a quick combination just before the bell. Wade’s corner, sensing his early control of the fight, urged him between rounds, “Take your time!”

(COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo.) Week four of the World Series of Boxing (WSB) Americas is upon us and features team rematches from week three of the season and the WSB debuts for six new boxers. All four Americas franchises will look to close out the first third of the season with a victory and build momentum for when boxing resumes for week five beginning January 5.

This week’s home teams, the Memphis Force and the Mexico City Guerreros, will be looking to exact some revenge upon losses suffered at the hands of the Los Angeles Matadors and the Miami Gallos last week. Meanwhile, both the Matadors and Gallos will be looking to break a visiting team skid for WSB Americas teams that now stands at six matches with no road team having earned a win away from home.

The Force (1-2) hope to even their record on Thursday, December 16 as the Matadors travel to Memphis for a rematch at the Desoto Civic Center in Southhaven, Miss, at 8 p.m. CT. With a 4-1 win last Sunday, the Matadors (2-1) currently lead the WSB Americas standings with eight points and 11 wins among their first 15 bouts to start the season.
