“THE BEST OF THE BEST” LIVE ON SHOWTIME–TIX ON SALE NOW!
4 Undefeated Fighters – 2 Olympians – 1 Night Of Boxing

SOUTHAVEN, MS – Prize Fight in association with Global Boxing Gym is proud to announce an unprecedented night of boxing coming to the Mid-South as they unveil “SHOWDOWN ON SHOWTIME” on July 16, 2010 live from The DeSoto Civic Center and televised on Showtime. This 6 bout card will feature 4 of the most talented young fighters in the world today fighting in separate bouts and putting their titles on the line.

” SHOWDOWN ON SHOWTIME ” is headlined by NABO Middleweight Champion and #4 world ranked Fernando Guerrero 18-0 (15 KO) facing the toughest foe of his young career as he goes head to head with Ishe “Sugar Shay” Smith 21-4 (9 KO) in the twelve round main event that will catapult the winner into sure world title contention. The powerful southpaw Guerrero is considered by many boxing pundits to be one of the top young fighters in boxing and will look to use the veteran Smith as his ticket to stardom on a world wide stage. Guerrero is coming off an impressive 2nd round stoppage of Chicago’s Michael Walker this past April on Showtime in Maryland. Walker had not been stopped or knocked down in his previous 24 fights. However, Ishe Smith is no stranger to big fights or big stages and needs Guerrero to move him back into the rankings and in line for title opportunities himself. Smith has fought the best of the best, starred on the reality series “The Contender” and been a top notch fighter for most of the past decade. This main event shapes up to be a show stopper for sure.

In the co-main event, 2008 United States Olympic alternate “Showtime” Shawn Porter 15-0 (12 KO) goes toe to toe with “The New Sugar” Ray Robinson 11-1 (4 KO’s) in a 10 round attraction. Porter, the NABO Jr. Middleweight Champion, is also one of the brightest young stars in boxing today. Porter has appeared on network television 5 times already in his young career and has already shot up to #14 in the WBO world rankings. Porter is no secret to Mid-South fight fans as he has fought 9 times already between Memphis and Tunica. Shawn’s action packed all out style will be on display in the feature bout of the evening.

Also, on the television portion of the card will be the undefeated Lanard Lane 12-0 (7 KO) in a welterweight clash against fellow undefeated prospect Mike Dallas Jr. 14-0-1 (5 KO’s)in 10 round bout. Lane is no stranger either to the Mid-South as he fought a fan friendly fight against John Brown on the April ESPN event from the New Daisy Theatre in Memphis. Lane, a Houston, TX firefighter, brings with him a level of tenacity in the ring that will once again leave fans in attendance at a loss for words. Lane fights from bell to bell at a pace that would wilt normal men.

Last, but not least, 2008 United States Olympic Team Captain Gary Russell Jr. 9-0 (6 KO) will be featured on the television portion of ” SHOWDOWN ON SHOWTIME ” as he duels with slick St. Louis southpaw Leon Bobo 18-5-1 (3 KO’s). Mid-South boxing fans will remember Gary Russell Jr. from his dominating performance on the ESPN card this past April at the New Daisy Theatre in Memphis as he made quick work of Carlos Diaz. Further, Russell also fought at the Fitz Casino in January of 2010 putting on a stellar performance against David Orosco Cano. Russell, a southpaw, is about as complete of a package as you will see in boxing today and will be fighting for his first title on this card. His hand speed is unmatched and he offers power in both hands.

Tickets for ” SHOWDOWN ON SHOWTIME ” go on sale Saturday, June 5th, at 10 AM and can be purchased at the DeSoto Civic Center Ticket Office, by calling ticketmaster at 1-800-745-3000, http://www.ticketmaster.com, and all ticketmaster outlets. A sweltering New Daisy Theater on Beale Street provided the backdrop for ESPN’s Friday Night Fights Friday night.

The broadcast included an NABO Lightweight title fight that exceeded expectations and a main event featuring two up and coming heavyweights looking to take their careers to another level in front of a national audience. The undercard featured two former Olympians looking to establish their own young careers. Neither would disappoint against two out-classed opponents.

Heavyweights Tony Thompson (33-2 21 KOs) Owen Beck (29-4 20 KOs) would plod through 4 rounds of a scheduled 10 rounder with Thompson gaining an early advantage he would never relinquish.

Thompson ended the first round dropping Beck with a right-left combination before the end of the round. Thompson would end every round hurting Beck before isolating him on the ropes in the fourth round. To his credit, Beck, who ended the second and third rounds almost going to the wrong corner, wouldn’t go down. But his corner would throw in the towel before their fighter received any serious damage. Thompson would record a TKO at 2:30 of the fourth round.

Lightweights Tyrese Hendrix (18-0-1 17 KOs) and Henry Lundy (17-0 10 KOs) began a fireworks-loaded fight for the vacant NABO Lightweight Title, by knocking each other down with simultaneous hooks. Lundy, would get the better of Hendrix for the majority of the fight, knocking him down a second time in the first round and putting him on the verge of a knockout in the second round. Hendrix, whose speed and power had been previously displayed during bouts in Tunica, had those same attributes negated by the speed and strength of Lundy.

Lundy threw everything he had at Hendrix and may have been frustrated by the fact he couldn’t knock his opponent out. However, Lundy utterly dominated the fight. Hendrix, on the other hand showed that he was more than a power punching fighter, giving as good as he got and possibly stealing one or two later rounds. Lundy would take the fight and the vacant NABO title by unanimous decision, 90-98, 88-100, 88-99. Based on his performance during the fight, Hendrix will have a title in the near future if he keeps performing on the level he showed Friday night.

U.S Olympian Gary Russell Jr. (8-0 5 KOs) would have an impressive showing against journeyman Carlos Diaz (10-22 4 KOs), who he eliminated in 1:32 of the first round. Russell wouldn’t allow Diaz to land anything before disposing of him.

Bahamian Olympic team member Taureano Johnson (1-0 1 KO) would make even quicker work of Ryan Bianchini (0-1) in 43 seconds of the first round.

Jr. Welterweight and native Memphian Marlon Lewis would take a majority decision 39-37, 39-32, 38-38 over Arkansas native Chris Gray (1-0) in 4 round fight. Jr. Welterweight Lanard Lane (11-0 7 KOs) would take a decision over John Brown (24-17-2 11 KOs) 60-54, 60-54, 60-54 in a 6 round fight.

A 31⁄2 -year pro, he is the current NABO jr. lightweight champion, and ranked #4 by the WBO. Co-promoter Brian Young said, “We’ve been working with Antonio for the last three years.
