Nelson Dominates Taylor!
By: Jeff White at Ringside, Memphisboxing.com

Prize Fight Boxing kicked off 2010 at the Fitz Casino in Tunica, MS, with a five card bout before an always boisterous crowd.

The scheduled eight round main event featured middleweights Jonathan Nelson (13-0, 6 KO’s) vs Clarence Taylor (14-23-4, 7 KO’s).

The fight started with light action, with Nelson getting the slight edge. Nelson was seemingly the more polished fighter but Taylor’s experience proved valuable as he knocked down Nelson in the third and picked his spots throughout the bout. Midway through the fourth Nelson took control, landing on several good combos when he got Taylor in the ropes. However, he seemed to lack the ability to finish up and capitalize on the advantage from the combos. But despite the hesitation from Nelson, he dominated the fight and won by unanimous decision.
Result Nelson, Unanimous Decision

Nicole Woods (9-6-1, 1 KO) faced Kimberly Connors (5-1-1, 3KO’s) in a jr. middle female bout scheduled for eight rounds.

The most entertaining fight of the night. Round 1 was fairly even, with Woods being the aggressor. Things heated up in the second, with Connor being more aggressive in taking the fight to her opponent. Both landed solid shots to the head and Connor’s nose began to trickle blood late in the round. In the third, both women came out swinging and Woods starting taking advantage of her reach to keep Connor at a distance. The fourth through seventh rounds provided more of the same furious action with each fighter landing numerous productive blows. Connor’s nose bled more profusely throughout. In the eighth and final round, both fighters came out with intensity, sensing it was practically a dead heat. Connor took control midway through the eighth, dizzying Woods with repeated shots to the head. It appeared the late charge might be enough to give her the edge, but almost fittingly, the fight ended in a draw. Valiant effort from both fighters.

Result 77-75 Woods, 80-72 Connor, 76-76 tie Draw

Dedrick Bell (1-0, 1KO) squared off with Rohan Wilson (2-3-1, 1 KO) in a scheduled four round jr. welter bout.

This fight started slowly, with each fighter sizing up their opponent throughout the first round. Wilson landed a solid right to start the second and initiate the contact. Wilson fought with an opportunistic style, relying on counterpunches to help neutralize the reach advantage of Bell. Bell was the aggressor, but his reluctance to shoot the jab allowed Wilson to get inside seemingly at will against the taller Bell. Bell was knocked down twice in the third, and Wilson landed a powerful right cross in the fourth to claim the unanimous decision.
Result: Wilson, unanimous decision

Gary Russell, Jr. (7-0, 3 KO’s) faced David Orosco Cano (1-7) in a scheduled four round featherweight bout.

Russell came out like a hurricane, smothering Orosco with combinations and body blows. He dominated from the opening bell, causing two standing eights and two knockdowns in the first round, after which Orosco’s corner stopped the fight.

Result: First round TKO, Russell (2:58)

Nathan Kempa (1-1-1, 1 KO) vs. Brandon Oldham (1-4-1, 1 KO) in a four round jr. middle bout.
Fairly evenly matched fight, with Oldham starting out as the aggressor. Kempa started landing good body blows in the second and third rounds. The fight was competitive throughout with good action. Kempa was cut over the left eye early in the fourth with an impressive right cross from Oldham. This seemed to light a spark in Kempa who closed the first round with a flurry of action.
Result: Majority Draw

Miranda targets Taylor!

Posted in 2006, Press Releases, Reports with tags , , , , on December 19, 2006 by Champ

From Fightnews.com
In less than three minutes on Saturday night, Edison ‘Pantera’ Miranda reminded the boxing world why he is probably the most devastating puncher in the middleweight division. Now the Colombian bomber wants the hardware to go with his status as the people’s champion, and in 2007, the first man on his hit list is the fighter seen as the undisputed titlist at 160 pounds, Jermain Taylor. “I definitely want Jermain Taylor as soon as possible and I hope he will be a true champion and fight me,” said Miranda. “He needs to stop fighting old men and junior middleweights and fight a true 160-pounder who is coming to fight, not just peck away at him and survive. I don’t come into fights looking for decisions; I come in looking for knockouts, and if Taylor truly wants to be respected as a champion, he needs to accept my challenge.”

(more) Taylor decisions Ouma! (12-11-06)

For Jermain Taylor, Kassim “The Dream” Ouma lived up to his nickname, for the middleweight king, fighting in front of his home town for the first time as a champion, could
not have asked for a dreamier title defense.

Well, short of a knockout, anyway, for while dominating the fight, Taylor was unable to floor the game Ouma.

While chants of “JAY-TEE!” filled the Alltel Arena in Little Rock, Arkansas, Taylor dominated the score cards in the early rounds, building a sizeable lead while Ouma could do
little but weather the storm.

Down the stretch, “The Dream” sought to turn into Taylor’s nightmare, rallying in a desperate attempt to dethrone the champion, but could not change the course of the fight.

All three judges scored it unanimously for Taylor, with scores of 118-110, 117-111 and 115-113.

Fightnews also had Taylor winning, though closer to the 115-113 score than the 118-110 ledger.

” He came in and fought all twelve rounds,” said the champion, now 25-0-1 (17 KOs). “He was a tough guy. He was just that tough.”

Ouma, now 25-3-1 (15 KOs), told the press that he would like another shot at Taylor, even if it was in Little Rock again.

” I’m never going to give up,” he said. (more)

Story by David Hudson
“ He could be considered one of the best middleweights ever with the tremendous amount natural talent that he has.”
That’s very high praise given that the 160-pound division has produced the likes of Carlos Monzon, Marvelous Marvin Hagler, Bernard “the Executioner” Hopkins, Mickey “the Toy Bulldog” Walker, Stanley “the Michigan Assassin” Ketchel and the incomparable Sugar Ray Robinson.
It’s even higher praise given that it comes from no less an authority than Hall-of-Fame trainer Emanuel Steward. The statement doesn’t come simply because Taylor is Stewart’s latest protégé. It comes because Jermain Taylor possesses a wealth of natural ability, tremendous desire and solid punching power.
The 28 year old Taylor already has amassed an impressive resume with two close wins over Hopkins and a draw against Ronald “Winky” Wright. Steward said it’s “almost unprecedented in boxing history” for a young fighter to fight those two hall-of-fame caliber fighters in succession. (more)

(more) Guinn: It’s Them or Me!

Lee Bates – Fightnews.com
When Dominick Guinn (26-4-1, 18 KOs) defeated Michael Grant by way of seventh round TKO in 2003, expectations were high for him.

Since then, Guinn has gone 4-4-1; however, to his credit, Guinn has been fighting the best competition in the heavyweight division. His losses came against opponents who had combined career records of 145-9-2. One of those fighters, Sergei Liakhovich, went on to become a world champion and another, James Toney, had just won the WBA title and been stripped for steroid use.

Guinn will look to get back on the winning track on Saturday, December 9, as he battles Zack Page on the undercard of Jermain Taylor vs. Kassim Ouma mega-fight at the Alltel Arena in North Little Rock, in his home state of Arkansas.

Guinn spoke with FightNews about the excitement of fighting in front of his home fans again; the tough competition he has fought in his losses, and his new philosophy on how he will fight from now on. (more)

In a teleconference held today for undisputed middleweight champion Jermain “Bad Intentions” Taylor, alongside legendary hall of fame trainer and manager Emmanuel Steward and fight promoter Lou Dibella, each answered questions for the media regarding the homecoming bout with Kassim Ouma in Little Rock, AR.

In an opening statement, Lou DiBella thanked everyone for joining on the teleconference and spoke of how he looked forward to December ninth as Jermain Taylor continues his extraordinary run of big fights.

DiBella stated, “It is very unheard of for a young champion to have a run of opposition like the fights with Bernard Hopkins followed by Winky Wright followed by a very deserving title challenger on December ninth, Kassim Ouma.”

Jermain Taylor then took the podium and greeted his veritable guests with a Happy Holiday welcome, stating, “I looking forward to the fight. Its going to be a great fight. Its going to be a great under card. A couple of my friends are on it, Terry Smith & Dominic Guinn. Its going to be a great fight.”
Manny Steward then chimed in discussing their camp and how training had progressed.

“I enjoyed training with Jermain Taylor for this second fight that I have been with him. The more that I spend time with him I’m realizing that he has so much talent that has never been even developed and he has the ability – if he remains at 160 – which I believe he will for another year or so by the way he is looking now, that he could be considered one of the best middleweights ever with the tremendous about of natural talent that he has. And, I’m just excited about this next fight,” said Steward. (more)
