4 Undefeated Fighters – 2 Olympians – 1 Night Of Boxing
SOUTHAVEN, MS – Prize Fight is proud to announce an unprecedented night of boxing coming to the Mid-South as they unveil “The Best Of The Best” on July 16, 2010 live from The DeSoto Civic Center and televised on Showtime. This 6 bout card will feature 4 of the most talented young fighters in the world today fighting in separate bouts and putting their titles on the line.
” The Best Of The Best” is headlined by NABO Middleweight Champion and #4 world ranked Fernando Guerrero 18-0 (15 KO) fighting in the twelve round main event against a fighter to be determined. The powerful southpaw Guerrero is considered by many boxing pundits to be one of the top young fighters in boxing and will look to use the veteran Smith as his ticket to stardom on a world wide stage. Guerrero is coming off an impressive 2nd round stoppage of Chicago’s Michael Walker this past April on Showtime in Maryland. Walker had not been stopped or knocked down in his previous 24 fights. This main event shapes up to be a show stopper for sure.
Also on the card is 2008 United States Olympic alternate “Showtime” Shawn Porter 15-0 (12 KO). Porter, the NABO Jr. Middleweight Champion, is also one of the brightest young stars in boxing today. Porter has appeared on network television 5 times already in his young career and has already shot up to #14 in the WBO world rankings. Porter is no secret to Mid-South fight fans as he has fought 9 times already between Memphis and Tunica. Shawn’s action packed all out style will be on display in the feature bout of the evening.
Also, 2008 United States Olympic Team Captain Gary Russell Jr. 9-0 (6 KO) will be featured on the television portion of “The Best Of The Best”. Mid-South boxing fans will remember Gary Russell Jr. from his dominating performance on the ESPN card this past April at the New Daisy Theatre in Memphis as he made quick work of Carlos Diaz. Further, Russell also fought at the Fitz Casino in January of 2010 putting on a stellar performance against David Orosco Cano. Russell, a southpaw, is about as complete of a package as you will see in boxing today and will be fighting for his first title on this card. His hand speed is unmatched and he offers power in both hands.
Last, but not least, on the television portion of the card will be the undefeated Lanard Lane 12-0 (7 KO) in a welterweight clash. Lane is no stranger either to the Mid-South as he fought a fan friendly fight against John Brown on the April ESPN event from the New Daisy Theatre in Memphis. Lane, a Houston, TX firefighter, brings with him a level of tenacity in the ring that will once again leave fans in attendance at a lost for words. Lane fights from bell to bell at a pace that would wilt normal men.
Tickets for “The Best Of The Best” go on sale Saturday, June 5th, at 10 AM and can be purchased at the DeSoto Civic Center Ticket Office, by calling ticketmaster at 1-800-745-3000, www.ticketmaster.com, and all ticketmaster outlets. January Fights at the Fitz Report!
Posted in 2010, Boxing News, Reports with tags Fitz, Fitzgeralds, Jeff White, Memphis, MemphisBoxing.com, Nelson, Taylor, Tunica on February 1, 2010 by ChampNelson Dominates Taylor!
By: Jeff White at Ringside, Memphisboxing.com
Prize Fight Boxing kicked off 2010 at the Fitz Casino in Tunica, MS, with a five card bout before an always boisterous crowd.
The scheduled eight round main event featured middleweights Jonathan Nelson (13-0, 6 KO’s) vs Clarence Taylor (14-23-4, 7 KO’s).
The fight started with light action, with Nelson getting the slight edge. Nelson was seemingly the more polished fighter but Taylor’s experience proved valuable as he knocked down Nelson in the third and picked his spots throughout the bout. Midway through the fourth Nelson took control, landing on several good combos when he got Taylor in the ropes. However, he seemed to lack the ability to finish up and capitalize on the advantage from the combos. But despite the hesitation from Nelson, he dominated the fight and won by unanimous decision.
Result Nelson, Unanimous Decision
Nicole Woods (9-6-1, 1 KO) faced Kimberly Connors (5-1-1, 3KO’s) in a jr. middle female bout scheduled for eight rounds.
The most entertaining fight of the night. Round 1 was fairly even, with Woods being the aggressor. Things heated up in the second, with Connor being more aggressive in taking the fight to her opponent. Both landed solid shots to the head and Connor’s nose began to trickle blood late in the round. In the third, both women came out swinging and Woods starting taking advantage of her reach to keep Connor at a distance. The fourth through seventh rounds provided more of the same furious action with each fighter landing numerous productive blows. Connor’s nose bled more profusely throughout. In the eighth and final round, both fighters came out with intensity, sensing it was practically a dead heat. Connor took control midway through the eighth, dizzying Woods with repeated shots to the head. It appeared the late charge might be enough to give her the edge, but almost fittingly, the fight ended in a draw. Valiant effort from both fighters.
Result 77-75 Woods, 80-72 Connor, 76-76 tie Draw
Dedrick Bell (1-0, 1KO) squared off with Rohan Wilson (2-3-1, 1 KO) in a scheduled four round jr. welter bout.
This fight started slowly, with each fighter sizing up their opponent throughout the first round. Wilson landed a solid right to start the second and initiate the contact. Wilson fought with an opportunistic style, relying on counterpunches to help neutralize the reach advantage of Bell. Bell was the aggressor, but his reluctance to shoot the jab allowed Wilson to get inside seemingly at will against the taller Bell. Bell was knocked down twice in the third, and Wilson landed a powerful right cross in the fourth to claim the unanimous decision.
Result: Wilson, unanimous decision
Gary Russell, Jr. (7-0, 3 KO’s) faced David Orosco Cano (1-7) in a scheduled four round featherweight bout.
Russell came out like a hurricane, smothering Orosco with combinations and body blows. He dominated from the opening bell, causing two standing eights and two knockdowns in the first round, after which Orosco’s corner stopped the fight.
Result: First round TKO, Russell (2:58)
Nathan Kempa (1-1-1, 1 KO) vs. Brandon Oldham (1-4-1, 1 KO) in a four round jr. middle bout.
Fairly evenly matched fight, with Oldham starting out as the aggressor. Kempa started landing good body blows in the second and third rounds. The fight was competitive throughout with good action. Kempa was cut over the left eye early in the fourth with an impressive right cross from Oldham. This seemed to light a spark in Kempa who closed the first round with a flurry of action.
Result: Majority Draw
Peterson Brothers at Fitzgeralds This Sat (11/18)!
Posted in 2006, Administrative, Boxing News, Press Releases with tags Anthony, Bowman, Brian Young, Fitz, Fitzgeralds, Judah, Lamont, Mahfood, Memphis, MemphisBoxing.com, Peterson, Prize Fight, Terry, Tunica, Wolfe on November 17, 2006 by ChampSouthaven, MS – Prize Fight Boxing returns to The Fitz Casino & Hotel November 18th as the undefeated Peterson brothers are set to appear in separate bouts in the latest installment of Prize Fight’s “Fights At The Fitz”. The main event will feature undefeated and #3 world ranked Anthony Peterson in an 8 round clash against former world titlist, Alfred Kotey from Ghana . Presently, Anthony (20-0,16 KO’s) is the NABO Lightweight Champion and was recently named by ESPN Boxing as it’s 2006 prospect of the year. Anthony appeared on ESPN multiple times in 2006 and captured his NABO title on the network in June by defeating Adan Hernandez at WC Handy Park in Memphis, TN. However, his opponent Alfred Kotey has a record of 24-13-1 (14 KO’s) and is a former WBO world title holder who has fought some of the toughest boxers in the business today. Consequently, Kotey is sure to be a formidable opponent for Anthony Peterson.
Lamont Peterson 18-0 (8 KO’s) returns to the Fitz for the first time since December 2005 as he will square off against Marteze Logan from nearby Covington, TN. Lamont is coming off a convincing victory this past September over Omar Bernal and must get by the tough Logan to line himself up for a potential title shot in 2007. Logan, who recently shocked the previously undefeated prospect Americo Santos, looks to add a blemish to Lamont’s perfect record. The Peterson vs. Logan bout will be an 8 round bout in the Jr. Welterweight division.
The star studded card at the Fitz continues to get better as 8-Time World Champion Ann Wolfe will also be on the card in a 6 round bout in the female super middleweight division. Wolfe is no secret to mid-south fight fans as she has appeared at The Fitz and in Memphis at FedExForum many times already in her career. Wolfe 24-1 (16 KO’s) will put her 19 fight win streak on the line against Valerie Mahfood 19-11-3 (9 KO’s). Mahfood is the only woman alive who has ever beaten Ann Wolfe as she stopped Wolfe on November 30, 2000 in front of a stunned audience in Houston, Texas .
Also on the card will be local sensation Ira Terry 10-0 (6 KO’s) from nearby Brighton, TN. Ira has been on a fast pace since turning pro this past February and will battle a yet to be named opponent in a 6 round Jr. lightweight bout. Ira’s combination of speed and power is admired by the Fitz fans as he is quickly becoming a fan favorite.
Josiah Judah, the younger brother of 3-Time World Champion Zab Judah, will make another appearance at the Fitz. Josiah will battle journeyman Anthony Bowman in a 6 round clash that is sure to be entertaining from the opening bell. In July of this year, Josiah last appeared at the Fitz as he won a unanimous decision against Norman Johnson. At the present time, Zab Judah is expected to be in attendance at “Fights at the Fitz”.
Tickets are on sale now for this star studded event at the Fitz Casino Gift Shop. Ticket prices are $25 in advance and $30 at the door and are sure to sell quickly given the line up of boxers on display. Sams Town – Wood blasts Mitchell!
Posted in 2004, Boxing News, Reports with tags Brian Young, Burford, Elmo Adolph, Ewing, Hinton, Hubinger, Johnson, Marsh, Mitchell, Nickel, Rinehardt, Ross, Sams, Town, Tunica, Vandevender, Ward, Whitfield, Wood on June 21, 2004 by ChampScotti Vandevender – Fightnews.com
Brian Young’s Prizefight boxing at Sam’s Town Casino in Tunica, MS brought the crowd another pleasing night of action. In the main event, heavyweight Frank Wood (22-3, 15 KOs) from nearby Nashville, TN proved far too powerful for late replacement Tim Mitchell (9-3, 4 KOs).
Wood began displaying a powerful left hook as he staggered Mitchell backward. By the end of round one Mitchell’s nose bled as breathed hard, deep breaths between rounds.
Round two opened with Wood striking a right hook that sprawled Mitchell across the canvas and into the ropes. Mitchell rose bravely only to suffer an onslaught of a left uppercut and right cross that sent him out on his feet. Referee Elmo Adolph mercifully halted the bout at 2:22 of round two.
John Johnson now 4-0 (4 KO)!
In the feature bout, light heavyweight John Johnson (4-0, 4 KOs) continued to build to his mystique as the local crowd favorite. This time the powerful youngster faced experienced veteran T.C. James (5-22, 3 KOs), who proved capable of frustrating the young power puncher with his evasiveness and award style early in the bout.
Johnson entered the ring behind a booming musical rap about his home state of Mississippi, a cloud of synthetic smoke, and a raucous reception from the crowd. Actually more composed and less wild and erratic than his previous bouts, Johnson stalked his prey from his initial stand off in the center of the ring, where he chose to seek out his opponent, stand face to face, and glare a Lennox Lewis-influenced stare through his opponent. Johnson’s countenance wore the same cool, calculated expression throughout the bout, a hunter meticulously seeking his prey.
Johnson struggled to find a way to land against the awkward James, but finally caught up with him in round two with a left hand that sent him into the ropes. Then Johnson increased the pressure in round three, forcing referee Paul Sita to halt the punishment at 1:31.
Christy Nickel Wins big in one!
Female junior middleweight Christy Nickel (2-1, 2 KOs) entered the ring smiling joyously and exuberantly. She then proceeded to completely out-power her opponent, Michelle Ewing (0-8). Nickel landed a solid straight right hand that sent Ewing sprawling on her back. Then a Nickel straight left hand flattened Ewing again. Ewing rose only to receive a left hook followed by a right hand that ended her night in the ring at 1:46 of round one.
Whitfield Too Fast for Burford!
Amateur sensation Rayonta Whitfield (1-0) began his pro career as a junior featherweight with a solid shutout of veteran Chris Burford (5-21-1, 4 KOs). While it might have seemed risky on paper to begin his career against an experienced opponent who has fought most of his battles at a higher weight class, Rayonta demonstrated lightning speed and movement in easily dominating every exchange of every round.
Whitfield clearly displayed why Prizefight Boxing has place a great deal of emphasis on this young man. With ring generalship like he displayed against Burford, this fighter already appears years ahead of a 1-0 fighter.
Hubinger Blasts Marsh!
Light heavyweight Adam Hubinger (3-0, 3 KOs) looked impressive in his battle against Robert Marsh (8-25-2, 3 KOs). Hubinger immediately worked behind a strong jab, often following it with a hard right hand. By round two Hubinger mixed in right uppercuts and blasted Marsh into the ropes. As Marsh’s nose gushed a fountain of crimson, he stood in the corner unable to answer the bell for the third round.
Local favorite Jason Ross Handed second loss!
Local kickboxing favorite Jason Ross (0-1) from nearby Southaven, MS made his pro boxing debut at light heavyweight against the extremely experienced Eric Rinehardt (15-52-1, 10 KOs). Rinehardt served as a replacement for Tyrone Dowdy, who was to make his pro debut as well. Ross came out thundering right hand artillery, fighting in a virtual phone booth as he landed solid blows. Ross ended the round with a left hook that sent Rinehardt reeling.
Round two saw much of the same as Ross continued a barrage of power shots. Ross maintained a kickboxer’s stance with his hands low as he attempted to land more power punches. But by the end of the round the much more experienced Rinehardt began to duck, move, and block Ross’s attempts to land.
Round three featured a complete reversal as Rinehardt came back strong. A fatigued Ross stood directly in front of his opponent as Rinehardt’s left hand began finding its mark – Ross’s skull. Rinehardt trapped Ross against the ropes as Ross absorbed left hook after left hook. A dazed and confused Ross took a beating to end the round and, suffering an injury to his left arm, could not return for the final round.
Hinton Drops an “H-bomb” on Johnson!
In the opening bout, supper middleweight Curtis “H-bomb” Hinton (2-0) soundly defeated Mike Johnson (0-2). Hinton began by landing a right uppercut that staggered Johnson. Johnson was able to land a right hand that stunned Hinton briefly, but Hinton returned with a right hand. Then a left hook. Hinton continued with another left hook and a right hand that finished the fight as referee Elmo Adolph waved it over at 2:48 of round one.
