Bush/Kerry not the only fight Tuesday night!

Boxing at the New Daisy was light last night in two respects. A smaller than average crowd showed up for a short list of fights. For those who got out in spite of the rain and who managed to pull themselves away from the lure of the presidential election Boxing on Beale put on 4 fights. Three 4 rounders and a 10 round main event.

In the 10 RD Middleweight main event, Walter Gilliam (157lbs.) took on Greg Dickson (160lbs.). Gilliam attacked early, doubling amd tripling up on his right hooks that set the stage for straight rights to the head of Dickson. On several occasions Gilliam cornered or caught Dickson against the ropes and really worked him over. Dickson took a pounding but seemed to be at his best when his back is to the ropes. Durnig the bout Dickson countered well with straight rights and hooks. Dickson appeared slow at times and reluctant to throw his jab, the one punch that Gilliam wasn’t defending. Although it was slow it landed. Dickson also faught this entire fight pretty much on flat feet that didn’t move a lot which allowed Gilliam to tee-off often. Every round began and ended with Dickson beating Gilliam to the first couple of punches then for the most part of the round Gilliam stuck it to Dickson. Amazingly, Dickson preservered the beating that he was receiving and actually hurt Gilliam (Gilliam grimaces after the shot) with a left hook to the body in RD 9. But its too little to late for Dickson. Round 10 ends with a spectacular flurry from both fighters and Dickson fighting with his back to the ropes. Dickson took a lot of punishment on the ropes but showed a big heart and a strong chin. Gilliam defeats Dickson, unanimous decision.

Logan Decisions Journeyman Yarbrough! (11/3/04)

The first fight of the evening featured journeyman fighter Lester Yarbrough paired against Martez “Too Sweet” Logan in a 4 RD Middleweight bout. The fight began with Logan overpowering and out punching Yarbrough. Every shot Logan threw was quick, accurate and deliberate. “Too Sweet” continued to go to Yarbrough’s body with combos that opened up Yarbrough’s guard and Logan landed clean shots to his head. Throughout the fight Logan stalked the slow, pawing Yarbrough. Yarbrough got in a few clean thumbing shots of his own like one in RD 3 when he caught Logan in the body with a chopping right hook to the body. But for the most part Lester endured a punishing from Logan. Logan wins the 4 rounder by unanimous decision.

One comment on Logan is that in this fight he stayed within himself and didn’t try and get Yarbrough out of there as quickly as possible. He took his time and fought his fight.

Heavyweights Collide in Pro Debuts!

In other New Daisy action new comers Courtney Johnson and Mike Posey debuted in a heavyweight clash. Johnson tipped the scales at 255lbs and his opponent Posey weighed in at 240lbs. Wild but exciting. This grappling battle started with both fighters looking awkward but determined as they threw punches with everything they had. During the first round the crowd loved it as the pair took turns tossing and throwing each other to the canvas (none ruled knockdowns). In the second stanza Johnson was very active and charged and chased Posey around the ring. Posey was hit with a few shots but none that hurt him. Likewise, Johnson took some punches that leave him bleeding from the mouth but none that look to have taken a toll on him. What did take a toll on Johnson was his conditioning. He took a knee, out of sheer exhaustion, abd made it up on the count of 8. Posey and Johnson then exchange a few shots and Johnson took another knee. This time Allen Luvell calls the fight on account hat Johnson can not continue after making the count. Posey wins his First by 2 RD KO.

Bunting Kayos Anthony in 1!

Fight three of the evening featured Cruiserweight Lafarrel Bunting (188lbs.) who gave up 60+ plus pounds to Richard Anthony (249lbs.) Shortly after the bell for round one Bunting goes to work on the large but slow Anthony. Anthony is throwing punches but they are wild and not many land. Bunting is just the opposite, not throwing many but when he does it lands with a thud. Bunting, catches Anthony with a quick left hook to the body and Anthony drops to a knee. After the count Anthony continues to fight and Lafarrel closes in again and drops the wounded Anthony to a knee with another well placed body shot. Anthony makes the count but wants no more. Bunting wins by TKO RD 1.

New Daisy 6/1/04 – Wiggins KO’s Ward in 5!

Former NABF Light Heavyweight Champ and Covington, TN native Donnell Wiggins scored an impressive KO over a game Charles Ward (Covington, TN) at :29 left in round 5. Wiggins improves his record to 21-4-2 with 12KO. Wards record falls to 7-19, 5KO.

Perryman Turns out the lights on Anthony!

Clarksdale, MS, Heavyweight Willie Perryman (7-6, 5KO), welcomed Richard Anthony to the New Dasiy by handing him a 1st round KO in his professional boxing debut. Anthony was overwhelmed by Perryman’s pressure and power. The KO came with :59 seconds left in round one.

Freeman Decisions Yarborough

In a fight that will possibly be the June Fight of the Month, Rodney Freeman pulled out a unanimous decision over journeyman Lester Yarbrough. Freeman has won 4 straight matches since being KO’d by Chris Burford in November ’03. Freeman is now 4-1, 2 KO. Yarbrough’s record falls to 12-44-1, 5 KO.

D. Logan, Sharpening Skills

Covington, TN, boxer Darnell Logan contiunes to look like a very promising up and coming fighter in the ring. He shows good discipline quick feet and a nice jab with increasing power. That being said, the opponents that he has come to face in the ring have had combined records of 0-15 and none of those charactersists. Logan will eventually step up to fight some better fights in the near future but there is no reason to rush his growth and throw him into the mix before he is ready.

“Tojo” Harris too much for Ward!

Light heavyweight Joe Harris (6-3, 4 KOs) used a ten-pound weight advantage to his benefit as he overpowered Charlie Ward (7-17, 5KOs) via a 5th round TKO.

The first couple of rounds featured the two fighters firing power shots in an attempt to strike early, but neither landed effectively until Harris stunned Ward early in round three. Ward managed to keep himself upright while fighting off a measuring jab from Harris followed by straight left hands.

By round four Harris began controlling the action, landing hard body shots that clearly hurt Ward. As Harris dictated the pace of the fight Ward attempted to fire back but mostly battled with his back to the ropes like a cornered animal.

The fifth round began with a great deal of inside fighting, as Ward began landing body shots of his own. But Harris returned fire with a devastating left hook to the body that crumpled Ward and sent him through the ropes. Ward reentered the ring prior to the final count but winced in pain, unable to continue the fight, resulting in a TKO victory for “Tojo” Harris.

Roy Rebounds, Beats Burford.

In a lightweight bout, Terrence Roy (5-1) rebounded from a tough loss to the hard-hitting Jerome Pillow to soundly defeat Chris Burford (4-16, 3 KOs). Roy showed his superior speed en route to a unanimous decision.

Roy displayed his evasiveness early, striking with lightning-quick punches and retreating from danger. Burford offered a valiant fight but just couldn’t match the superior speed of Roy. By the fifth and sixth rounds Roy literally had his way with Burford who almost appeared hand tied from his lack of matching speed.

Goings Roughhouses Rooker!

Cruiserweight Jim Goings (1-0, 1 KO) retired Rowdy Rooker (0-1) via a 3rd round TKO. This bout started as a rough contest from the opening bell. The two got tangled up early and Goings body slammed Rooker into the mat.

Rooker threw wildly as the two roughhoused their way through the bout. In round three Rooker’s shoulder-length hair tossed about and obstructed his vision. Goings took advantage of the opportunity and landed several right hooks.

Apparently spent, Rooker dropped to a knee untouched and refused to fight any more, resulting in a TKO victory for Goings.

Bonds Survives to Beat Johnson!

Middleweight Marcus Bonds (1-0) gave up 20 pounds and survived a major shot in round one to come back and earn a decision versus Lamont Johnson (0-1-1) in what proved to be the most exciting bout of the evening.

Bonds faced adversity early as the much bigger Johnson landed a huge right hand that staggered Bonds and sent him reeling into the ropes on the bout’s first punch. Johnson continued by throwing power shots in an attempt to land one more hard shot to Bonds’ skull. But, Bonds managed to survive the round, his eye bleeding slightly from an accidental Johnson head butt.

Bonds came out firing in the second, threading Johnson’s guard with a straight right hand that wobbled Johnson. He followed with a left hook to the larger Johnson, but Johnson remained upright and closes out an action-packed second round.

Rounds three and four featured the two fighters mixing it up in a slugfest as Bonds countered well. The crowd roared as Bonds took charge with a stiff, accurate jab. Bonds took advantage as Johnson appeared to tire. Bonds hammered his larger opponent until the bell sounded, earning him a decision victory.

Logan Wins with Speed!

Welterweight Martez Logan (13-6-1, 2 KOs) used his superior speed and ability to outpoint Lester Yarbrough (12-42-1, 5 KOs). The slower Yarbrough threw long, looping power shots that the much quicker Logan dodged.

Logan led to the body early, and controlled the fight with speed and accuracy. Yarbrough couldn’t match the power and speed Logan offered. Logan hit the canvas midway through round four as Yarbrough begged to be credited with a knockdown but it was deemed a slip.

Logan finished strong, exchanging in the center of the ring, as the bout came to a close, ending another fine night of fights at the New Daisy Theatre.

Robbins Continues to Dominate at the New Daisy!

Marty Robbins (18-17-1, 15 KOs) continued to excite the crowd with his power punching in a Lightweight fight in the latest night of boxing at the New Daisy Theatre. Robbins looked impressive as he displayed power punching and a sharp uppercut en route to a seven-knockdown performance of Chris Burford (4-14, 3 KOs) who could not continue after his seventh trip to the canvas.

Burford entered the fight fresh off a dominating knockout victory just as Robbins did, but Robbins clearly brought the heavier arsenal Tuesday night. Beginning in round two, Robbins’ uppercut began finding its way through Burford’s guard.

Robbins dropped Burford with a left uppercut in the second round and the third round. But, Burford valiantly battled back to start the fourth before Robbins again found an avenue down which to drive his hard left hand, dropping Burford again.

After remaining on his feet during the fifth round, Burford again absorbed Robbins’ power shots, hitting the canvas twice from looping right hands.

Burford refused to quit and returned for the seventh round where another uppercut sat him on the canvas only to see him rise one more time. But, it proved to be the last time as Robbins struck with yet another left uppercut that sat Burford on his rear shaking his head, unable to continue.

Galarza Outpoints Journeyman Yarborough!

In a Welterweight fight, Lester Yarborough (12-40-1, 5KOs) fought a defensive strategy against the much quicker and busier Louis Galarza (5-1, 2 KOs) as Galarza easily out pointed him 60-54 on all scorecards.

Galarza began digging right hands to the body in round two and flurried with a barrage of punches to end the third round. Yarborough continued to offer little offensively, instead fighting to survive and clinch his way out of trouble.

Kassi Dismantles Powell in Pro Debut!

Heavyweight Frederick Kassi (1-0, 1 KO) made his professional debut in impressive fashion as he easily dismantled Kenny Powell (2-3-1, 2 KOs), knocking him down in the second round.

Kassi unleashed power shots from the very beginning. In round one a Kassi left hand stunned Powell and put him on the defensive. Kassi then stormed in the second, plunging a hard right hand into Powell’s body that sent him to the canvas. Powell weathered the storm as Kassi seemed to tire during the second half of the round.

But, Powell had suffered enough and refused to answer the bell to begin the third, repeatedly telling corner man Red Fortner “that’s it” and shaking his head.

Rios TKO’s Smith in 2

Joey Rios (5-0, 3 KOs) from the Bronx, NY made the trip down south worthwhile as he kept busy in round one and then unleashed a fury in round two against local fighter Bruce Smith (1-13). Rios displayed power with both hands as he sent Smith to the canvas twice in the second round. A left hook to the ribs sent Smith down first, followed by a right to the ribs that did the same. Then Rios closed the show by finishing Smith off with another left to the body, earning him a TKO victory at 2:23 in round two.

Amateur Davis Pounds Out a Victory!

Jessie Davis pounded his way to victory in round one over Jimmy Johns. Davis began landing heavy shots and dropped Johns to the canvas. His corner men attempted to throw in the towel and retire their fighter but changed their mind when questioned by referee Allan Lovell.

Davis immediately jumped on his opponent and landed a hard right hand followed by another right to the temple, sending Johns down for the count at 2:45 in round one.
